The Surprise du Jour

A Winterborne flashback from Gilbert’s Portland Restaurant over 10 years ago.
Review by David Sarasohn

The strange thing, of course, is that Alsace has no sea coast.

And hardly any border with Thailand.

But two years after taking over the Winterborne restaurant, Alsatian Gilbert Henri has put his own impressive mark on one of Portland’s seafood specialists – and his mark extends so spicy Thai prawns. Now, he has overhauled not only the menu but the dining room as well, giving it a warm, friendly feeling.

The menu is even friendlier.

Henri has kept many of the specialties that for years have drawn maritime munchers to […]

February 27, 2018 – Crab Juniper

We are longtime diners at Cuvee and appreciate Chef Gilbert Henry’s attention to a truly delightful dining experience each time we visit. We have made the trip from Portland to Carlton every winter for many years for one dish: Crab Juniper. It is a seasonal menu item only during Dungeness crab season, usually off the menu around April 1. A blend of exotically seasoned basmati rice, delicate white fish, Dungeness crab, pears, and cream sauce. Other standard consistent menu dishes are equally as good, our friends like the Boeuf Bourguignon. The Prix Fixe menu is $35 for three courses, we […]

Had our Anniversary dinner here…lovely quaint restaurant that packs a wonderful culinary punch. Most favorite was the Chef’s presence, recommendations and hospitality. The food was tasty and we wanted to lick out plates clean…

January 3, 2018 – Rave Review

Loved it, especially the snails!! The food was wonderful. Having lived in France for a while, the food was comfort food for my palate of French food. The servers were friendly. A true find in Oregon wine country!

December 11, 2017 – bien sur!

A charming spot in the whistle-stop town of Carlton! Henri was a great host, blending his subtle humor in every bite! We had a wonderful meal, great wine…all in all, a 5-star evening! We will return, bien sur!

December 3, 2017 – Wonderful

This small place is superior to any place in the area and, in addition to well prepared down to earth French food, has great prices and a very reasonable wine list. The owner and small staff were wonderful.

Where Sasha Went

(A Customer’s Experience)

There are a lot of really great restaurants in the Yamhill/Willamette/Tualatin Valley area thanks in part to our robust wine industry. Up until recently, I had focused most of my time dining at restaurants in the Portland area, there are so many great places there, you could go out every night and never run out. Having recently moved out of the area has given me the excuse to branch out a bit and boy was I ever happy to have given that chance after enjoying an unforgettable meal at Cuvee in Carlton, Oregon.

The restaurant resides on the main street of Carlton, […]

The Story of Henri

Gather round, come one and all… for I have a story to tell that will rivet you to your seat and cast your eyes wide open to the teller. It is a story about wandering, a story about need, a story of communication and a story of clarity. But mostly, it is a story about the human spirit, perseverance, trial and tribulation, and ultimately of the Saving of a Party!

But first, a word about our honored celebrant: I, a most humble observer, am convinced that Henri truly is an old soul. Just look at him! No one would say he is […]
